WELCOME TO KNAPPINGNEWMEXICO.COM
We are a diverse group of individuals from all over the great state of New Mexico who are drawn to the ancient art of creating arrowheads, knives, atlatl's, spears and many other kinds of tools out of stone the way our ancestors did.
Unless you've been bitten by the knapping bug it is difficult to explain why this is such an intriguing hobby, but after you've learned a few basics it becomes as irresistible as a Rubik's cube. It's sort of like playing chess with mother nature. Each piece of lithic material has a beautiful work of art inside it. Revealing that work of art involves a complex series of flake removal strikes that must be executed with precision, varying the angle and force of each one. One small miscalculation and the whole thing turns into a handful of gravel, but with a little bit of practice the gravel making becomes less frequent as more and more of the works of art begin to emerge.
We meet once a month to learn from each other and share what we've learned. There are not a lot of flint knappers in New Mexico but our numbers keep growing as the revival of ancient skills becomes more popular.
We hope you enjoy the web site and please check back soon as it will always be changing. If you are interested in learning flint knapping or visiting one of our meetings then please contact me at the address below.

These beauties were made by the one and only Tommy Heflin. The steel knives were crafted by George Arms out of O-1 tool steel and canvas micarta handles. Everything is this photo belongs in a museum somewhere. Amazing work guys.
